Good morning from a some what chilly White Point, Queens. We took our
feeders down in the spring and removed most of the Grape/Kiwi vine combo
thinking a new structure would soon replace it. Things seldom work the way I
plan these days. Still no structure up. might be next year before that
happens if ever, heavy sigh. About two weeks ago, after receiving a very
stern talking to by one of the Hairy Woodpecker, female (my goodness, such
language!) We put out a seed pie and the birds started coming. As soon as we
got a call about this years Sunflower seeds arriving at Shur-gain, we were
back in business.
Today so far we have visiting Blue Jays, Starlings, Big Crows, Goldfinches,
Chickadees, Juncos, a solitary Song Sparrow, Both Red and white breasted
Nuthatches, several of each... but no Woodpeckers. What we are still missing
are the usual Song sparrows in numbers and White Throated Sparrows. We have
had Evening Grosbeaks dropping in but not so far today. Mourning Doves are
back and the numbers are building. 20+ at dusk last evening.
Our Sparrow numbers are concerning me because I am not seeing them around at
all. Usually they are our more common bird.
Stay safe, Marg
