Greetings and Congratulations David from your friends and colleagues in
Nova Scotia. We were elated to hear of the award for your work on* The
Impact of Short-term Rentals on Canadian Housing. *
It was just over a year ago that you presented your *Report on Short-term
Rentals in* *Halifax.* That report and your continuing work here and
around the country has both informed and inspired our efforts to encourage
and develop policy and regulation around this issue.
Bravo to you and your colleagues in recognition of this important work.

Subject: fyi-May Day for May Street?
To:
fyi-The houses on May St at Robie to the corner of Fern are rumoured to be
slated for demolition.
Apparently all the residents with the exception of one home have been
evicted. (To geo-locate, this is between the Homes for Hondas & Bloomfield
neighbourhoods and across from EAC)
Preservation of existing neighbourhoods is not just about heritage-its
about affordability, economics, culture and environment—39% of energy
related CO2 emissions come from building and construction.
This is a sign of what’s to come as the Centre Plan has incentivized
demolition by increasing heights without any evaluation of the existing
structure or controls.
The city is well aware of what it is doing. In 2016 FHC wrote to the Mayor
and the Premier asking that the charter be amended to include controls for
demolition.
https://www.halifaxcommon.ca/dear-mayor-take-control-of-demolition-permits/
There are lots of new additions to the demolitions listed in the letter,
for example Killam properties has quietly knocked down two historic homes
at the NW corner of Carlton Street across from where they are permitted to
build the 18-storey high-rise on the east side.
Dear Bloomfield neighbours,
Are you interested in what the Centre Plan says about chickens, selling produce from your doorstep or even stores on every corner in our neighbourhood? The Centre Plan mentions these and other development options for peninsular Halifax. More information is available at centreplan.ca
If you are interested, you are invited to a 90 minute Bloomfield neighbourhood community walk with Kat Kitching and HRM staff to learn how HRM’s Centre Plan affects our neighbourhood, which parts of the Centre Plan are still being refined and to collect your input.
There are 4 remaining slots open for a walk this Sunday, November 22 starting at 3pm. To indicate interest in this walk register at https://forms.gle/E8meLDbqVmmPRRyp8 These 4 slots are available first come first served, but if there's enough interest Kat can book another walk.
Folks can write directly to kat(a)outdooractive.ca if they want to join a walk on a different day/time.
All the best,
Ron

Residents Association facebook page
In all of my advocacy on various issues over the years, the one that has
been the most difficult, and with the most ups and downs is less than a
block from my house. I'm determined to try one more time, to have the right
thing done with two square blocks of public property in the middle of a
growing city.
If you live in Halifax - please consider asking HRM to reconsider its
current plans to sell the entire two blocks of the old Bloomfield School to
a private developer. HRM has done no public consultation on this
development since 2007. A lot has changed since then, including most
recently HRM council with the 2020 election.
please consider adding your name to the following petition

Hello,
We are having difficulty finding someone reliable (and not prohibitively
expensive) to clean the leaves off our flat roof. Does anyone have
suggestions?
Thanks,
Maureen and John
Hello everyone,
I'm helping to organize another series of Community Walks this
November/December to help folks understand which parts of the Centre
Plan are still being refined right now and collect your input.
I'd be pleased to do a "pilot walk" with BNRA members this weekend if
you folks can self-organize into one ormultiple groups of max 8 people
and contact me with a time you can meet.
I can do Saturday after 4:30 pm or pretty much any time on Sunday.
the sooner I know, the better.
We would have an HRM planner with us to answer detailed questions that I
can't answer.
I don't have time to coordinate this in detail, but if you folks can
self-organize a time that works for you, then I'll do it -please let me
know asap.
Otherwise, happy to book a walk with you folks at a later date of your
convenience.
And/or do more walk for anyone who can't make it this weekend.
But the weather is going to be great this weekend!
- Kat
Here's our generic blurb
Walk 'n Roll Halifax invites residents, community leaders and local
organizations to join guided tours throughout the Regional Centre to
raise awareness about Centre Plan Package B and collect input from
residents. The Centre Plan is a planning process for peninsular Halifax
and Dartmouth within the boundaries of the Circumferential Highway that
will help shape the future of development.
The focus of these 2020 walking tours (first series held in 2016) will
be on low-density established residential neighbourhoods. This is an
opportunity to share information about your neighbourhood with your
neighbours and HRM, learn about the proposed changes, and to provide
feedback and comments to the Municipality.
To ensure compliance with the Public Health order, groups will be
limited to 8 participants on each tour, plus a Walk 'n Roll facilitator
and an HRM Planner. Registration is required; more info to follow on that.
The walks will be scheduled shortly; please check back in to see the
schedule and select one that interests you -- or contact us now to book
a walk at a time and location to suit you, if you are part of a
community group or club or organization and have 5+ interested participants.
Please contact Kat at kat.kitching(a)gmail.com to make a booking.
Please share with all who may be interested 🙂
