Hey all!
thanks to Ron for pointing out the virtual information meeting on the
Maynard development tonight- I joined in tonight partway through "for
fun" and was the only one there! hah :)
(apparently one person had come and gone earlier in the session).
I think the people on the call representing the developer were pretty
happy to have someone to talk to :)
Anyhow, I asked a few questions and gave a few comments- but of course,
this building follows the new Centre Plan guidelines so its design
parameters are set by the Centre Plan bylaws for a "corridor" and
there's no way it will be rejected or substantially changed.
(as to why this part of Maynard is zoned "corridor" when it's a side
street, it's a bit of a blip for Maynard - the rest of that street is
zoned either residential or "higher order residential" with stricter
limitations - but the planners seem to have zoned this lot as part of
the Agricola corridor since it connects through to Agricola. Whether
you agree or not, it is a "fait accompli!" :P)
As citizens who are interested in giving input, we can be hopeful that
small ideas for tweaks might be made if they catch the developer's
attention.
But the developer is not required to make any changes based on public
feedback.... unless the public feedback draws attention to some element
of the building's design being in contravention to the bylaws.
So one thing I thought to ask that might be in their power to include is
whether there is going to be a public right of way through to Agricola
from Maynard.
I think that would be a nice feature (especially with the crosswalk at
Maynard and North - it means you could reach the shops on Agricola from
Bloomfield hood without having to pass through the busy North-Agricola
intersection!)
It would also help align with the Centre Plan's goal of creating more
pedestrian-friendly environments.
I feel like this is one aspect where a lot of people asking for the
right of way might actually make a difference - apparently this is
something they are "considering" right now but have not committed to.
They are collecting feedback at
info(a)maynardsuites.com
and I would also copy the planning office if you want to give feedback
and ensure the planning staff hear it:
Regional Planning Office, HRM <planhrm(a)halifax.ca>
So feel free to fire off a quick email about that if you are keen on it!
And if you have other questions about the development I did look at the
plans in some detail so I can try to answer your questions. :)
Sounds like it will have a decent amount of open space out front between
the sidewalk on Maynard and the building (like at the front of St
Joseph's square building) and that will be nice!!

Ni neighbours,
On the walk home last night we saw a notice announcing a public
meeting about the development on Maynard street right behind the NSLC
and Cycle Smith. I know this is just outside our BNRA boundaries, but
some neighbours might be interested, and I bet a few of us head over
there for bikes or bottles every so often!
