public consultation meeting planned for *Thursday, November 19, 2020* with
a focus on the Halifax North End community. The consultation process will
help inform recommendations and decisions related to Regional Council’s
direction to explore changing the zoning on the site from HR-1 to HR-2 as
part of Centre Plan Package B process. Get more information and/or take the
survey.

Hello all, for those of you interested in the pending sale of the
Bloomfield Centre - there is still a chance to have a much greater public
say. Last week HRM removed the monument to the playground movement that has
been on the corner of Almon and Agricola for many many years. It feels like
they are erasing the history - which will make it much harder to hold any
private development accountable. Council will not approve the sale until
after the election. Please consider this in your vote for our district. We
need reconsideration of how the sale proceeds and we need a councillor who
will stand up for public space and public engagement for one of the last
pieces of public land available in the North End.

Subject: Help Elect these HRM Representatives Who are Friends of the Common
To:
Please read, circulate and vote! (Sorry for cross-postings)
From Now – Oct 17 Elect HRM Representatives Who are Friends of the Common
<https://www.halifaxcommon.ca/oct-6-17-elect-the-representatives-who-are-fri…>
now until October 17 you as a citizen of HRM can vote to elect a Mayor and
Council. To aid you in your choice FHC sent a 6-question survey to 80+
electoral candidates. Non-responders are: *Mayor Savage*, *Steve
Stretch*, *Sam
Austin*, *Tony Mancini*, *Lindell Smith*, *Richard Zurawski*,* Lisa
Blackburn*, *Paul Russell* and *Tim Outhit*. *Could disinterest of these
elected officials be a reason that the best interests of the Common are so
ignored? *
Based on responses FHC did receive (1/3 of candidate), we decided in
certain cases to endorse candidates (Max Taylor, Jen Powley, Virginia
Hinch, Kathryn Morse, Eric Jury and Derek Bellmore). District 9 is a tough
call but Shawn Clear has NOT been a friend of the Common. Please read any
or all the linked responses www.halifaxcommon.ca, consider carefully and
VOTE! Next encourage 10 friends to vote as well. Our officials were last
elected with ~ 30% voter turn out. (Sorry this is late, we had a weird tech
week.)
Best wishes from Friends of Halifax Common

Thanks to those of you who confirmed that the test message got through.
There are still some bugs to be worked out, but we may be operational.
I realize that it is a little late in the game, however I wonder if
anyone thinks it would be a good idea to try to organize an outdoor
candidates meeting before October 17. The park on Ontario is an obvious
choice for a venue. Otherwise, I have been told that there is a quite good
spot on Fort Needham with good acoustics.
Any thoughts on the matter?
Pete
Hello, my name is Virginia Hinch. I’m running for Council in District 8. I
spoke with a couple of the residents on Fuller Terrace today at the pit in
the North End. I would like to know more about your group and how I
can help.
Sincerely
Virginia Hinch

Subject: HRM approves recommendations to develop regulation of short-term
rentals
To:
Hi everyone,
Just a note to let you know that HRM Council has approved the Staff
proposal to move ahead with developing regulations of short-term rentals. A
centre piece, from our perspective, is the emphasis on only permitting STRs
in primary residences, within residential zones and to include STRS in the
municipal registration of rental properties. Obviously, as a region-wide
initiative, this will involve a lot of work, time and further
consultations. However, it gets the ball rolling and hopefully we can see
some progress before the next tourist season begins.
Thank you everyone for keeping on this and communicating with your
Councillors and others. The vote was nearly unanimous. Councillor Whitman
voted against.
I will share more once I look at the minutes and see where this goes next.
I expect it will be post-election before we see further developments. I've
included the link to the original proposal and report.

meeting.
